...Okay, so I get it. We're all confused as to WHAT ARE elven military rankings. Well, there are several different specialty paths to take, so I'll try to make this accurate and simple.
Everyone starts out as a RECRUIT or VOLUNTEER. (depending on whether your character WANTED to be in the military, or was drafted)
From there, paths.
NORMAL SOLDIER (you can get authority over lower-ranks in Specialty divisions in this rank ONLY.)
soldier
Mage
Captain
Sergeant (optional. These have authority between a Commander and Captain, but can't give them orders, and doesn't have to follow their exact orders (though it would be wise to obey them most of the time, else risk demotion). They mostly train recruits or volunteers.)
Commander
General (authority over Apprentices and lower-ranked specialty division, individually)
Admiral (authority over Apprentices and lower-ranked specialty division, individually or as a squadron)
Supreme Commander (note that THERE ARE NO MORE of these. These were demoted back to Admirals when the last King died.)
SPECIALTY DIVISIONS (these vary based on element. SU'ACO = SCOUT (tames and rides Eagles (think Tolkien) or other flying beasts, and gathers information). CHATH = SPY (blends into scenery and gathers information). NIAR = FLOODER (focuses specifically on withholding/stopping tides or currents, and flooding or de-flooding areas). HAR'DRO = FORTIFIER (focuses on being able to instantly call up walls to protect the soldiers while they regroup/recover, and keeping these walls up, despite enemy attack). Note that these require a great deal of innate skill and stamina, and many don't make the cut.)
Apprentice (for two months. If found to have inadequate skills, becomes a Mage and is unable to join specialty division again)

Captain, {Scouting/Spy/Flood/Fortification} division (only takes orders from the Lord himself)
